Renewing a professional license costs anywhere from nothing to $570 per cycle, and the cycle runs from one year to 10 years. Across the 128 trade and state pairs where both the cycle and the fee were published, a license kept for 10 years costs between $20 (notary in Colorado) and $2,850 (real estate in Connecticut) in renewal fees alone. For a real estate license the median renewal fee is $103 and the median ten-year renewal bill $490; California charges $350 every 4 years, Connecticut $570 every 2, Louisiana $35 every year. Licenses on a one-year cycle cost a median of $43 a year to keep, those on a cycle of four years or more $11 a year. Continuing education is paid separately to course providers, and the hours range from none for most notaries to 45 per cycle for a California real estate agent.
Three numbers decide what a license costs to keep
Every renewal is described by a cycle (how many years the license runs), a fee (what the board charges at the end of the cycle) and a continuing education requirement (how many course hours you must finish before you renew). The calculator counts one renewal at the end of each full cycle that falls inside the period you choose, at the fee printed in the board's current schedule. Over 10 years, a two-year license renews five times and a four-year license twice, since the third four-year renewal would fall after year 10. Late fees, reinstatement charges and fee increases a board may adopt later are not counted, because none of them can be read in advance.
We found a published cycle and fee for 128 of the 173 trade and state combinations priced on this site. Where the board lists a fee without a cycle, or the fee page could not be read, the calculator shows the first license only and says so, rather than inventing a figure.
Ten years of renewals, license by license
The table sets the trades side by side. The median cycle, fee and ten-year bill are taken across the states where the renewal was published; the last two columns name the cheapest and the dearest of those states for a decade of renewals. The spread inside a single trade is often wider than the gap between trades.

The largest ten-year bill in the data belongs to real estate agent in Connecticut: $570 every 2 years, or $2,850 over 10 years. At the other end, 3 combinations renew without a fee at all on the pages read, among them insurance agents in Michigan and North Carolina, where the work of renewing is the continuing education. Real estate shows how a long cycle can hide a large fee: California asks $350 at each renewal, which looks steep next to $35 in Louisiana, yet the California license renews only 2 times in 10 years, for $700, while Louisiana's yearly fee adds up to $350. Connecticut, at $570 every two years, reaches $2,850.

One-year against four-year cycles
A short cycle means a small fee paid often; a long cycle a larger fee paid rarely. To compare them fairly, divide each fee by the years it covers. The result across every license and state in the data:
| Cycle | Combinations | Median fee per renewal | Median cost per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 16 | $43 | $42.50 |
| 2 years | 73 | $64 | $32 |
| 3 years | 7 | $115 | $38.33 |
| 4 years or more | 32 | $45 | $10.63 |
Licenses on a cycle of four years or more cost less per year to keep than those renewed annually, a median of $10.63 against $42.50; the 73 two-year licenses, the most common cycle, sit at $32. The comparison mixes trades, so read it as a pattern rather than a rule: notary commissions and CDLs dominate the long cycles and carry small fees, while the yearly group includes several electrician and pharmacy technician registrations. The cycle also changes the paperwork. An annual renewal leaves less room to forget a deadline, and a missed renewal can bring a late fee or a reinstatement process that costs more than the renewal itself.
Continuing education, the cost that is not on the fee schedule
Boards set the hours, not the price of the courses. Insurance is the most uniform trade: 20 of the 27 states priced here ask for 24 hours per cycle. Real estate varies from 8 hours a year in North Carolina to 45 hours every four years in California. On the beauty side, 10 of the 15 cosmetology states priced here publish no continuing education hours on the renewal pages we read, and Texas asks for 4. Notaries are the lightest: 14 of the 20 states priced have no education requirement to renew. Course providers charge their own prices, so add your quotes to the fees above for a full budget.
The first renewal is sometimes heavier than the ones after it. Several real estate commissions attach post-licensing courses to it: Florida, Georgia, Indiana and Louisiana all list post-license hours next to the pre-licensing course. The real estate page and each state page give those details where the board publishes them, and the state overview shows the first-license fees that come before any renewal.
